Brooke and Sarah are typical Slurries (inhabitants of Surry Hills. Minds out of the gutter, thankyou). With backgrounds in design, art and other various creations, they have first-hand experience of trying to get a leg-up in the local industry. They decided to do something about it. They started a market.
Hope Street Markets launches this weekend with the “Winter” collection, and will be followed up every three months with the new season from a handpicked selection of local artists and designers. It’s a three-day, nonprofit indoor extravaganza that sounds more like an event, with food, drinks, entertainment and of course limited, hand made clothes, accessories, art and bric-a-brac. They promise a “unique place unlike anything that Sydney currently has to offer” - and no commercial design.
It reminds us of something you could find around the back lanes of Shoreditch in London or Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY. What better place to bring it to Australia than Surry Hills? “The art and design here is what it’s all about… there is a blend of sub-cultures and a non-pretentious vibe – yet there is still a cutting edge which keeps Surry at the forefront of what’s happening in our fine old city of Sydney.
Ben Frost & xx’zilla, Torso Corso, Scratch Design and Emshop are all representing this weekend – and it’s a great opportunity for the creative community around Sydney to meet, connect, and get inspired. To sweeten the deal, any profits will be donated to the Hope Street Urban Compassion project, helping bring hope to the streets of Sydney’s homeless. Nnnnaaawww….
