“Well, it’s a Spanish restaurant, not a club,” remarked Vidette, who sits across from me in the office. “I reckon it just got too messy.” No-one’s really sure what’s going on, including Jimmy Sing, who runs the club. “From last Sunday we have been unable to access our space and have only been met with uncertain answers as to when we can return,” he said on their website, regarding the sudden closure.
Good God Small Club, which has been running some great nights including Jingle Jangle and Siberian Nights as well as recently Communion was really starting to become one of my favourite spaces, even if it got pretty hot down there at times. I guess I just thought it was charming having to walk through a bunch of Latino women dancing to La Bamba before I ended up in what seemed to be an underground indie lair.
I’ve said it to people before – the rate that we’re going in Sydney, we’re not going to have enough venues to support a proper scene very soon. And if they close the Annandale, I’m packing up and going to Melbourne. It’s worrying when venues disappear so quickly like this and the doors closed, no questions approach seems to be the mercenary norm.
You can email them for more info at info[at]goodgodgoodgod.com. Or if that’s not your thing, you can make sure you attend gigs and pay door prices and support venues who make live music and good times possible.
