Hello. You look
confused. Let us explain. One night over the past few years
you were at The World Bar and signed up to receive something
from us. So far, all you've been getting is flyers. We wanted
to do something different. It took us a while to work out
what that might be, but today we celebrate Finally-Coming-Up-With-Something
Day.
Welcome to Throw Shapes, a pleasant little Ezine for anyone
interested in music, culture, the arts and, of course, pretty
pictures. Make yourself at home; have a click, have a scroll,
have a look around. We’ll plan your night-life,
distract your day-life, review
things for you and show you photos of nice-looking
people who may or may not be you and your friends. Also, look
hard enough, and you'll find free stuff. We're nice like that. |

The Cobrasnake is like the Paris Hilton of social photography - check
his page on a hangover when your brain is melting, your hands are
shaking and everyone is revolting. There are thousands of 90% hot,
70% nude and 99% munted people from all over the world to make you
feel better. |

RIDERS'
AL ASKS DAPPLED NED:
+ With your swashbuckling good looks, long
hair and mangy beard there’s one thing I need to know –
are you a pirate?
> I am. I had
to replace my hook with a robotic hand when I joined Dappled. My left
hand now has the dexterity of a juvenile chimpanzee, which means I’ve
taken over Hugh’s old role as the one who probes termite mounds
with a twig to feed the others. I’m teaching them rudimentary
sign language as well. They can all ask for bananas. They also love
finger painting.
+ When push comes to shove, who is
your favourite songwriter in Dappled – Tim or Dave?
> Definitely.
+ What’s your favourite TLC song?
> 'No Scrubs'.
Obviously.
DAPPLED ALEX ASKS RIDERS'
AL:
+ Is that your real hair?
> Yeah. I figure I’m
gonna be bald eventually so while you got it, flaunt it.
+ Make a sentence out of six of these words – arse, bending,
I, lifted, threw, up, cheese, digested, after, melted, erotic, ghost,
slept, with, exciting.
> I melted erotic
ghost arse cheese.
+ Favourite thing to do with
an empty room, a big spoon and a jar of vegemite?
> Close the door behind
me.

CLAP
YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH @
ENMORE 23/05
It was sad-faces all round last year when CYHSY cancelled their
tour but it was worth the wait - they brought megaphones
AND harmonicas. Alec’s broken vocals and Robbie’s
enthusiastic keyboard-pounding and tamborine-shaking immersed
us in a quiet chaos consistent with the paradoxical mood of
their latest album. It should have been louder. There should
have been more room to dance. |

Sunday 10 June
So not everyone made it to Austin, Texas for SxSW this year yeah? Well the Annandale Hotel is putting on their own little festival for us – featuring a bunch of our faves like Cut Off Your Hands, Moscow Schoolboy and the Panda Band. (NOTE: Throw Shapes does not endorse binge drinking. Unless it’s a public holiday. Did we mention it’s a public holiday?) |

John Lennon almost got deported in 1972 for his apparently dangerous
and disruptive anti-war efforts, such as the obviously threatening
stint where he just lay in bed with Yoko for two weeks. This
film was written and directed by film-biography veterans David
Leaf and John Scheinfeld, and documents Lennon’s troubled
relationship with the US. According to Yoko it’s the documentary
about his life that Lennon would like the most. |

IT. FANCY 'WHAT'WORK? CLICK

| Remember when these guys released their
first album and everyone thought they were kidding? They were
most definitely not kidding. Fancy Footwork offers that same
sleazy fun nostalgia shared by
She’s In Control (and the 1980s). They’re
still funking up synth with those cheesy hooks and clap machines
– unmoved by the nu-rave that’s defined their downtime
between albums. Standout tracks are 'Fancy Footwork' and 'Momma’s
Boy', but the highlight comes from 'Bonafide Lovin': “never
mind an SMS, what you need is a sweet caress”. |

| There’s not enough space in this teeny
section to do full justice to this album, so here is a list
of some words instead. Expansive. Dream-like. Melodic. Hopeful.
Intimate. Layered. Textured. Accessible. It was layed down by
James Chapman on a 16 track recorder, in his bedroom, with no
computers. Makes you feel like a bit of a nonachiever really. |

| ‘No surprises’ isn’t usually
a great thing to say about a release, but with Expatriate we
forgive them because they really do it all so well. In The
Midst is moodier, darker and more textured than their EPs
– but it follows that anthemic new-wave formula to a T.
They break the pace with a few ballads, but it's that synth-heavy
energy we love them for. Hooray. |

Dungen have already gone through all the stages of indie stardom in Sweden, from obscurity to groundswell to breakthrough to backlash – but over here they still have namedropping cred. Centrepiece Gustav Ejstes adds fiddle to his Jethro Tull flute-stylings, bringing an incredible acid-trip-with-a-pillow escapism to the ordered chaos of their last release. |

|
| It’s definitely the year of the sophomore album for all of our indie breakthrough bands. While most have been (predictably) criticised for taking themselves too seriously, the Bravery's second album works because they've done all that, but managed to keep in the fun. PopMatters’ call it “post-disco post-post-punk new wavy pop and overcooked near-emo ennui.”. We’d just call it indie pop |
