Howard and Rudd must be kicking themselves. Grazillions of hard-earned tax dollars wasted on campaigning, promising, advertising, and Not A Small Amount Of Smearing. The economy, the environment, border control (really? Again?), workplace agreements - all these huge issues and we're as excited about this election as we were about Peaches "Gonzo" Geldof's arrival and departure . And after all that, all they really needed to do was launch a website with a countdown and some crazy fluro lettering. Rookies.

In more local news, Arcade Fire are coming (squeal.), Hope Street Markets were inspiring and we took photos, and bogon moths are disgusting and everywhere and we hate them and want to rip their heads off and stick them onto pins and wave our new blood-soaked moth-head flags in the faces of other disgusting moths as a form of warning.

BUSSTOPKNOBS.COM
Ged Beckland, one of the founders of BusStopKnobs, recounts his inauguration into the world of crude bus-stop graffiti in Liverpool in 1969: "It was hastily drawn and looked like a cactus. The balls such as they were, looked like Desperate Dan's chin. My mam caught me staring and gave me a clip around the ear. I've been smiling ever since." The release date is TBC, but they're still calling out for submissions.... It's the excuse we all needed to bring our digital cameras into public toilets. C=8TATION

You've read The Book. You've seen The Film. Now you can buy the T-Shirt. Happy birthday to you and your slanted stroke cuts, your well-defined capital 'G' spurs, your distinguishable and pleasing glyphs on the 'R' and the 'A'. Nicholas Martin, the man behind the ConsumeHelvetica campaign, says, "I make Helvetica Tees because I love the fact that only about 2% of people understand what the shirts are about." Join the 2%.

STRANGE CREATURES TOUR Signed CD Pack
Nowadays it seems you can point at any band and say "look who just erupted on the scene!!", only to have them buying a suit and sitting behind a desk before you even get to the exclamation marks. Expatriate and the Cops might not be considered veterans on the music scene, but kudos to them for staying decent for more than two years. They're touring nationally right now with one of our favourite live acts the Seabellies, whose instrument-swapping, melodica-playing antics we're sure we'll be writing about in another two year's time. If you missed the Sydney shows, or had a preposterously tall person in front of you the whole time, we have some signed CDs for you to enjoy instead.

JEFFERTON JAMES
Sydney's Jefferton James claims he got into design for two reasons: to distract people from what a terrible speller he was, and also because it seemed to maybe be the best way to maybe meet Sarah Blasko somehow. We think he's selling himself a bit short. His interest in music-art was borne out of the artwork of Stanley Donwood for Radiohead's Kid A - "I loved the fact that he had visualized so accurately the mood of that album. Something he did was like giving that album an extra vocal track." Scroll down for more.

  FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS
For anyone into intellectual hilarity, non-intellectual farce, and/or random bursts of well-executed music genres by mostly-hairy comedians (eg. Anyone into the Boosh). They call themselves "New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo". We're not sure how long it'll take for this to get huge in Oz, but a bit of pre-emptive quoting never hurts. Find it on YouTube.

MY KID COULD PAINT THAT Palace Cinemas
From 18 October
When Marla Olmstead was four she was having her debut exhibition featured in the New York Times to serious international acclaim, and selling her paintings for tens of thousands. Ever sceptical we just returned from her website to check it out for ourselves and as it turns out, the kid paints good. This film documents her swift ascent into the arts, raising questions along the way about exploitation, the media glare, and the meaning of modern art itself. When I was four I was sitting in a puddle of avocado on the kitchen floor playing with my toenails. If any one wants to commission a documentary about that, get in touch.

PLASTIC PALACE ALICE The Vanguard
17 October
We have so many good things to say about this Melbourne band. Their online bio lists glam-art-rock, country ballads, pop anthems, cabaret, Krautrock, digi-rock, post-punk and "the soundtrack to your worst nightmare" as just some of the genres they dabble in. In terms of comparisons, their high-rotation 'Empire Falls' sounds like what would happen if you threw Arcade Fire, David Bowie and Oscar Wylde into a cauldron... a cauldron of sexy. They have a string section, an alluring website, and their presser describes them as "perversely literate pirates of the high arts". If that wasn't enough for you demanding bastards, they put on an astounding live set too.

WAIKIKI HIP Wharf 2 : Sydney Theatre
From 09 October
In August we ran a giveaway to this year's Wharf 2LOUD Push program. Usually we'd be done with the editorial support, but the plays were so good that we asked them for tickets to one from last year too. Waikiki Palace was enough of a hit in 2006 that they've given it a second run with a second play, Hip Hip Hooray - both written by Lally Katz, directed by Chris Kohn and fused together in a double bill of comedic invention. Rather than trying to summarise both in 100 words, we'll pinch from the presser and direct you to the site: "As a team Lally and Chris create worlds that are extreme yet true, bizarre, ridiculous and poignant."

MORE JEFFERTON JAMES
After inspiring by a John Columbus gig, Jefferton James went home, drew the music, and later showed it to the band. They loved it, and he was quickly pinched up by a number of other local bands to contribute to posters, fliers and albums. His nostalgic and whimsical story-book style has featured on posters and covers bands like Cuthbert and the Night Walkers, Bridezilla, Dead Letter Chorus and John Columbus. "I feel blessed that I have got to work mainly with bands that I am crazy about.. it makes it a hell of a lot easier to listen to a bands music and fall into their world and then try and draw what you see there" He hasn't met Ms. Blasko yet but we wish all him the best.
BAND OF HORSES Cease To Begin  WIN IT :: HORSES :: CLICK HERE
This is one of Team Throw Shapes' most anticipated 2007 releases, but we'll try to be objective. While there are moments of carefree alt-rock, the overall mood here is of loss and contemplation - listening to it with a hot sun and a blue sky is a bit out-of-step, but it's Autumn in America. Cease is just as sophisticated, considered and balanced as 2005's Everything All The Time, but perhaps less lofty and with arguably (we argued..) more ballads. Any Wincing-era Shins fans will appreciate Bridwell's sweetly-tortured vocals and the twisty-turny melodies. We heart Sub Pop. (SH)

IRON AND WINE The Shepherds Dog
The bearded devil of modern folk presents his third LP - this time with subtle hints of African folk influences, a bit of electronica, and a healthy dosage of experimentation (in 'Carousel' Sam Beam runs his voice through a vocoder to make his voice waver as though singing underwater). The addition of 7 other members replaces the scarcity of previous albums with layers of instrumentation, giving The Shepherds Dog a richer sound to previous releases; but it's an uncluttered complexity that keeps it in line with their typical style. We really heart Sub Pop... (AP)

AKRON/FAMILY Love Is Simple
To describe this as mere folk would be to pigeonhole the unpigeonholable. Suffice to say they've contributed to Canadian Post Rockers Do Make Say Think's latest release, so if you're into that sort of thing. There are banjos, synths, noisy bits, spacey quiet bits, skronky parts, 4 part harmonies and some parts which have an almost tribal, hedonistic quality. We imagine they recorded this while dancing round a campfire, chewing on peyote and smearing each others' naked bodies with clay. Like Animal Collective, it's challenging, but in a very good way. YELLE Pop Up
Yelle barely speaks a word of English - her lyrics are co-written with Grand Marnier and make for pretty dodgy English translations like 'cuizinier with your little sex surrounded by red hairs'. But who listens to lyrics these days? The album is packed with danceable bubblegum electro, complimented by Yelle's suggestive French singing that is hard to resist. While she's poppier than her Justiced, Digitalised and Daft Punky counterparts, this album is fun enough to have a shelf life well into summer. (AP)

THE PANICS The Cruel Guard
Like The Devastations, The Go Betweens and Augie March, The Panics have an aptitude for telling uniquely Australian stories with each song. 'Don't Fight It' is getting continuous airplay across community stations, but bear in mind that it's probably the cheesiest of the album's offerings. The album's opener 'Get Us Home' does the band more justice, with swirling strings that build momentum through the song and demonstrate the experience and talent of the band. If the rest of the album was as strong, it'd get another star. (AP)
RELEASED ON DEW PROCESS 18 OCTOBER > MYSPACE
THE PAPER SCISSORS Less Talk More Paper Scissors
The Paper Scissors are an incredibly tight live band, and are brilliant performers. "We Don't Walk" & "Yamanote Line" are the stand outs on stage and this translates to the album, with the sing-along choruses and infectious bass lines. Love aside, it's a struggle to listen to this album the whole way through - similar to their debut E.P. That voice, while so instantly recognisable, and laced as it is with such aching energy, actually becomes the band's predicament. This album just seems to strain your ears and in turn, sadly loses your interest. (GM)
