Sometimes it’s hard to feel like we’re not teetering on the edge of apocalypse. There’s been train disasters, flash floods, shipwrecks, and Paris Hilton has found God – So our computers all imploding last week didn’t really surprise us. While robots performed weddings and scientists were cloning monkeys, there we knelt under desks on our hands and knees, plugging and unplugging cords like Neanderthals. Apologies for the late issue.

Yep, it’s been an eventful few weeks – the coalition got offensive, the Dalai Lama hung out at the zoo, and Hilary Clinton made a funny. And Sydney's cross city tunnel was sold for $700 million, which seems like a huge amount to spend on what is essentially an underwhelming portion of negative space. We’d rather spend it on an umbrella that doesn’t embarrass us by violently inverting in public every time the wind puffs.

Yeah, it's pretty much self-explanatory. This guy gets photos sent in every day with pictures of ridiculously obnoxious looking men and ridiculously good looking women. He opens up a forum. People comment. Hours of fun.
SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL 8 - 24 JUNE

The Sydney Film Festival is one of the world’s longest running film festivals, showcasing the best in contemporary Australian and international cinema every year. We’re quietly salivating over all of the programs on offer – Sounds on Screen features nineteen music-related docos and films (on subjects from Kurt Cobain to Silverchair to Bollywood…), and Provocateur highlights the latest in cutting edge cinema to “challenge, agitate and demand your attention”. We’ve got two lots of three flexi-passes that'll give you a taste of what’s out there. We’d steal them all for ourselves, but we hear there are laws about that.

So match your best black sneakers and Warhammer T-shirt with your finest dinner jacket, and g37 y0ur n3rd 0n. /end.

    THE WALL

“One person will be chosen in secret to be the Murderer. The murderer then has to kill as many people as possible by winking at them WITHOUT GETTING CAUGHT! It is up to all the guests to try and work out who the murderer is BEFORE THEY DIE! Once you have been killed, you cannot reveal who killed you because you are DEAD! To enhance your detective skills, we recommend Cluedo-esque costumes for the night.”

Katherine White’s poloroid photography (above right) can be poured over all week at Bar Cleveland. But the exhibition-launch Murder Winks extravaganza is one night only at The Wall. That’s right. Murder Winks, with alcohol. "YES!", we hear you yell. Then, "Wait - what's The Wall?"

+ + +

The global creative scene has gone crazy. Designers are the new artists, artists are making music, musicians have become ‘performers’, performance, well, it's always been an art-form – and Sydney is imploding into an incestuous orgy of inspiration. Still, despite the best efforts of spaces like China Heights, Monster Children, the Chauvel and Blender to name only a few, the local scene is grossly under-furnished… and lets be honest, a lot of people are really just going for the free piss.

The Wall is a new(ish) night which fills that void - for artists who can’t afford to exhibit at the usual haunts, and for art enthusiasts who also like drinking, dancing and playing nostalgic/ridiculous games. With no cover charge, this sounds very much like the kind of thing that should have begun much earlier than December last year. We asked Dan Chin and Amy Manning what it’s all about.

+ Hi. So. What’s it all about?
Young, old, full-time or hobbyist artists can exhibit their work for free for a week. Wednesday every week is a launch – we party, drink and dance to rad tunes while checking out the art.

+ Yeah, you manage to squeeze a heap in. Art, games, competitions, auctions – all fused with music.
Well art and music are so closely related, it just seemed natural to fuse the two… We love that one week we can have a graf artist, then the following a musician, then a painter, then a performer - so it never gets a chance to get old.

+ The first time I went there was an auction, the next time you were selling old-school eskies, then there was speed dating, a zine launch..
Yep, we had the auction, we’ve had the speed dating, pin the tail on the fucked up donkey, a giant pinata, and a 'drink and draw' comp where whoever drew the most obscene pic won…

+ All fun and games. Your favourite artsy types?

Dan: Ben Frost and Luke Trivett.
Amy: I’m also a big fan of James Williams, EAMO, Lovebite – and Andy Golledge’s EP launch was a magical night
Dan: And Richard In Your Mind make me want to cream my frilly panties.

That’s gross, Dan.

Hit The Wall on Wednesdays upstairs at Bar Cleveland from 8pm. Be prepared for fun, games, dancing and of course some incredible art. > click here for details

RESPECT: WE HEART FACT BOOK
We found this book sitting in one of the cardboard trays behind our computers last week. It’s from 1987 and judging from the dust has remained untouched since then. Apart from bestowing upon us some groundbreaking facts (the Romans invented concrete), it asks a number of exciting questions such as “Why are cancer and AIDS so feared?” and “When is a worm not a worm?
(A glowworm is an insect!!!)

DENDY FILM LA VIE EN ROSE
Release date July 12 – June 25 advance screening DENDY CINEMAS
What is it with French stuff right now? Every time we like something, it ends up being French. That’s half the reason this appeals to us - a lavish, epic film starring Marion Cotillard (Big Fish) and Gérard Depardieu, chronicalling the tragic life of musical icon Edith Piaf. The other half is because it’s cold and rainy and if we could be doing anything right now it would be have our hearts warmed by a sad French film.

PIVOT SPECTRUM
JUNE 22
Pivot call themselves a ‘post-rock, pre-hover car, the meeting of past and future, analogue and digital, good and evil.’ We call them ‘a shit-hot band’. Whatever the case, you can catch their rich electro soundscape in all its jazz-infused/enthused glory this Friday, supported by another of our local faves The Instant.

Occasionally something significant occurs, during which you feel things will never be the same again. An End Has A Start is the soundtrack to these times. Fragile moments of synth, strings and piano are sliced apart by fast drums and roaring guitar as Tom Smith sings of sadness, hope and spiders. The result is a nostalgic listen of anthemic proportions - empowering and uplifting reminders of why we liked The Back Room so gosh-darn much. (AP)

DIGITALISM IDEALISM  WIN IT - NAME A SONG? CLICK HERE.

When indie kids started going to electro gigs, everyone got a bit confused. Now electro acts are starting to sound like bands and we really have no idea what to wear. While many of the tracks on the latest from Digitalism keep with the patented electro that everyone assumed would define them (you’ve been dancing to 'Zdarlight' and 'Jupitar Room' for months now), its the more vocal hooks of 'I Want I Want', 'Pogo' and 'Anything New' that we’re getting all excited about. THE BIRD AND THE BEE THE BIRD AND THE BEE
This album is like that part of October when everyone’s in love, it's warm in the sun and refreshing in the shade, and you just bought a bicycle with a basket and streamers on it. Smooth harmonies, jazzy melodies and twee lyrics is a safe but welcome combination – and a nice warmer-upper when it's so cold that you feel like you could snap off a finger and use it to cool down your tea.

DIZZEE RASCAL MATHS AND ENGLISH

A balance of social commentary and irony has always been the trademark of Dizzee’s garage grime style. This album holds true, with appearances from the Arctic Monkeys and Lily Allen, but it’s the tracks that star Dizzee alone which pack the real punches. Buy it for ‘Sirens’, and ‘Pussyhole’ which diss’s fellow rapper Wiley – who in turn diss’s Dizzee in his new album. Gangsta whaaaaaat.

KRAFTY KUTS FABRICLIVE.34

Perfect to chuck on when you discover the friend who promised to DJ at your party is found slumped unconscious in the toilet. Lucky for you, Martin Reeves has selected classic funk and hip-hip (Read: Grandmaster Flash) and served it on a bed of  breaks/house/electro. Plus he’s mixed it WAY better than your mate would have – do it justice and listen to it in its 80 minute entirety.
