We had promised to ourselves and each other that this issue would make absolutely no reference to That Unrelenting Raft, in the understanding that you would all be as done with it as us. How many “Boat Isn’t Moving As Much As It Probably Should” headlines does it take to realise it’s just crap news? Still, when the Pasha Balker was emancipated so close to Independence Day, we realised we'd be able to theme this whole paragraph. It was too hard to resist.

So Happy Independence Day. Happy Freedom to Paris Hilton; Happy Release to Lindsay Lohan; Happy Crafty-Escape-From-A-Maximum-Security-Alert to Tony Blair. And to non-smokers: Happy Liberation from the disgusting morning-after stench of lingering second-hand smoke. Our hangovers will hopefully be slightly more bearable from now on. Slightly.

FACE YOUR POCKETS
It’s a simple idea: Unload the contents of your pockets/handbag onto a scanner. Squish your face on top. Expose your brain and valuables to dangerous radiation. All in the name of art. This Russian project is a double-edged Ignore It– either check out the self-contained and stunningly-arranged lives of participants or, if you’ve got some time, the inclination and a pocket-full-o’-fun, borrow the company scanner for a minute or two.
UNDERBELLY FESTIVAL 14 JULY
Underbelly is a social artistic experiment, and over 100 local fringe artists and performers are getting involved; creating, collaborating and cross-pollinating with whoever shows up over 10 days of public-access fun at the Carriage Works. It started on the 2nd of this month, but culminates on the 14th when the venue will be transformed into “a massive indoor music and arts festival, showcasing an unpredictable collection of performance, music, digital media and art installation.” Everyone can get involved, the atmosphere will be incredible, and yes, there will be live music, cafes and bars.

DINOSOUR JR DOUBLEPASS AND CD 8 JULY
Dinosaur Jr. is on the List Of Influences of pretty much every seminal band - Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Lemonheads, Pavement... the list is insane and continuous. They split in 1997 after a series of arguments that climaxed when J Mascis hurled a guitar at Lou Barlow on stage because no one else would punch him. Still, 'tis the season of reformation (the Pixies, the Cure, the Pumpkins, RATM...) and Dino have followed suit. They’ve recorded an album, they’re touring the world, they’re coming here and, yes, on this leg Lou Barlow proves all is forgiven by opening the gig with a solo set. You just wet your pants.

Put on your spectacles, your most intellectual-looking scarf, and your satchel: we’re getting our book on. We’ve spent the past fortnight (and the past fortnight’s pay) inside our favourite independent bookshops from the inner city. First, we took ridiculously daggy photos of staff-members that do them absolutely no justice (sorry). Second, we rubbed salt in the wounds and asked them a terrible, horrible, no-good, very-bad question – their favourite book. Third, we published it here. So now - they probably hate us. Anyway here it is, from the people who should know:

Kinokuniya
The Galleries Victoria, George Street 02 9262 7996

Okay, it’s Japan's largest chain – but there’s only one in Australia so that counts as independent right? Another artsy shop with a great layout, massive selection, and comprehensive design, magazine, music, anime and film sections. As one review says, “If it isn't in store and can't be ordered, it must have been written by a blind Uzbekistani failed monk with a bad publicist.”

Store Manager: Steve Jones He has a Daschund named Fritz who likes to eat books and assorted remote controls. Favourite book of all time? El Dorado by Dorothy Porter Five words to describe it? The, Last, Book, I, Read Read it day or night, in bed, with a block of chocolate and an iPod with your favourite music playing.

Ariel Booksellers
42 Oxford Street Paddington 02 9332 4581

Best known for its suave interior, artsy design books and subsequent penchant for attractive COFA kids. Still, the bit we like best is the staff picks, where each recommends a particular book and writes a little bit about why. This time we saw a bunch of new ones next to a bunch of our favourites, so yeah, they'll be seeing a lot of us next week.

Staff Member: Luke He is a culture fanatic Favourite book in the shop? Fushigi Circus by Mark Ryden Five words to describe it? Dionysiac, ethereal, twisted, surreal, Boschian Read it in your sleep, as respite from a nightmare.

Gould’s Bookshop
32 King Street, Newtown  02 9519 8947

Prepare to be overwhelmed. Gould’s opened in 1988 and is a bit of an institution, with over a million second hand items piled wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling over 6000 square feet of shelves that are separated only by hip-width aisles - most of which are already commandeered by huge, stacked boxes of… more books. So yeah, Gould gets to choose two books.

Shop Owner: Bob Gould (YES! The Bob Gould!) He used to buy the Golden Notebook for women he was interested in. And it always worked. Favourite books of all time? 1. The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing, 2. Ride On Stranger by Kylie Tennant Five words to describe it? Relationships between men and women, Life &the Labour movement Read it when you’re going to sleep. Or eating.
  Gleebooks
49 Glebe Point Road, Glebe NSW  02 9660 2333

A similar selection to Ariel, but more emphasis on literature, and a more organic feel - the ordered chaos, the musty smell, the charmingly Bohemic clientele. On top of all that is the delightful surprise when you stumble upon the glorious film, art and design section upstairs that has couches AND magazines. Add a coffee machine and I'll move in.

Store Manager: Roger Mackell He has been a bookseller for thirty years. Favourite book of the last five years? A Fine Balance by Robinson Mistry Five words to describe it? Epic, Sad, Full-Of-Life, Comprehensive, Engaged. Read it anytime in a chair, but not when you’re feeling depressed.

Better Read Than Dead
265 King Street Newtown NSW  02 9557 8700

Yes, Newtown again, but to be fair this strip of King is laden with so many good bookshops and it was too hard to choose between them. Better Read made the cut because of its proximity to post-purchase cafes, amazing catalogue, and staff members whom we always try to impress with comparable knowledge, wit and friendliness.

Bookseller: David He thinks beagles rock! Favourite book in the shop? The Looming Tower by Lawrence Wright Five words to describe it? Enthralling, Concerning, Scary, Detailed (No fifth word.) Read it on a couch in winter in the Blue Mountains.
Books On King
161 King Street Newtown  02 9519 7602

This shop has been a favvy of mine since I moved down the road - partly because I discovered Wilde and DeLillo here and partly because they’re second-hand and I’m a student on a budget. It has a family atmosphere, well-organised shelves, a manager who knows everything that’s on them, and a cat called Shakespeare.

Bookseller: Shakespeare (he does not actually sell books directly. Because he is a cat.) He likes attention/fish/boxesFavourite book in the shop? One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey Five words to describe it? It’s, A, Real, Good, Book Read it home in front of the fire on a cold/wet Winter’s night.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
For The Love Of God is the latest from Damien Hirst, and its exhibiting at the moment in London’s White Cube Gallery. 8601 diamonds encrusted on the platinum-cast skull of some 18th Century guy. It cost Hirst US $28m, but don’t worry (we could hear you worrying), he’ll be getting around $98m back for it. Yeah, it's great, but come on - no grills?

Claude Jones Gaffa Gallery
Mutation and Imagination, 5–17 July
Claude Jones comes to Sydney following her Imaginary Places collaboration residency at Cabada's Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada. Inspired by the horrifying potential of biotechnology, this exhibition features drawings, photos, prints and objects of an “imaginary world of hybrids and mutants, intended to provoke inquiry about how we perceive physical otherness...”. Mutations of the fastastic, grotesque, deformed. So yeah, probably have dinner after.
West Chauvel Cinema
Film screening from the 5th
Khan Chittenden’s been a busy boy, with two films out in the past two months – Clubland, where he plays an innocent and loving 20 y.o, and West, where he plays Pete, a streetwise toughguy living in his best friend’s shadow. West is set in the outer suburbs of Sydney, and follows an intense and intimate triangle between Pete, his best friend Jerry, and of course a beautiful woman who messes up their lives. Jerry gets the girl as always, but leaves her with Pete one night...sexy time ensues...

Patrick Wolf The Magic Position WIN IT :: The Magic What? :: CLICK HERE

When we put this album in around the office, and the first song “Overture” came on - the soaring strings, the heavy percussion, the Bowie-esque vocals – everyone went quiet. Which never happens. All the highpoints of the captivating opener continue through a masterfully constructed/executed album, and while the melodramatic grief of his first two LPs is represented in songs like “BlueBells” and “The Stars”, they’re balanced by characteristically campy theatrics that revel in a more colourful and triumphant optimism.

Lo Fi Fnk Boylife WIN IT :: Swedes are musical :: CLICK HERE

This young duo are all set to be the next big electronic export from Sweden, after the likes of the Knife, Jenny Wilson and Peter, Bjorn and John. Despite their hipster rep though it’s pure pop, at times stripped back but always packed with simple, cute vocals and tunes. While it lacks variation in tempo and levels, all in all Boylife is hedonistically upbeat and very (perhaps too) easy to tap ones fingers on the desk to in an irritating fashion. Alex P & SH

Panther Secret Lawns

I’m writing this after only one listen - I wanted to go with my initial vibe. Said vibe = ‘Freakin’ Rad’. But then, nothing bad ever comes out of Portland does it? Secret Lawns is the one-man DIY project of Charlie Salas-Humara, and features Prince-like vocals over a bed of quirky, experimental pop. Synth, violin and organs gives depth to the falsetto disco madness – meaning dancefloor or bedroom, it brings the heat. Alex P

RELEASED ON Pop Frenzy 25 JULY > MYSPACE
Ryan Adams Easy Tiger

Perhaps a more consistent and focused sound than Adam’s previous (and yes we’ll use the word prolific) repertoire – and even if it is less immediately inspiring, it’ll grow on you. The songs sit somewhere between rock, alt-country and all-American blues – a sound that sits nowhere on the Australian music soundscape. An easy listen on a lazy afternoon, if you’re in the mood for a bit of Nashville twang.

RELEASED ON Universal 23 JUNE > MYSPACE
Trans Am Sex Change

Where Brian Eno had his Oblique Strategies, Trans Am created “Obscene Strategies” in the recording of their eighth LP – whenever the band hit a block, they’d follow a random suggestion card; ie. “Take a nap”, “Rip off black musicians” or “Pillow fight!”. The result is an album of cross-genre experimentation, which, while impressive for its vast and innovative scope, loses consistency towards the end. Alex P

Justice +? Cross? Justice? Self-Titled? What?

Another long-awaited, ridiculously controversial debut full-length. You’re already familiar with “Waters of Nazareth” and “D.A.N.C.E”, but be prepared for these to be the catchiest pop-crossovers in the album. While we’ve found it less-than-spectacular, there’s more hits than misses - Justice can clearly do more than blow your speakers with singles and remixes. (Just skip straight past ‘The Party’ and Uffie’s extremely predictable impersonation of herself. Ohhh snap.) Alex P
