Yes
it's
been the coldest July in 20 years, but sitting here in unnatural
levels of heating, two jackets and each foot wrapped in an inverted
sheep, it's fair to experience some levels of comfort. Until
we check the news. Seriously, between the end of the Zemanek
era, pollies all over YouTube
and MySpace,
and an unaccounted-for
tooth, we're getting a little bit worried. Clover
Moore is doing her best to make us feel safer with inspired
protective systems, but is the world really alright
when there's things out there like
this?
We can sit here lamenting the war, the weather and the PPCA
fee increases all we want - but sometimes it's
a nicer idea to just get into your balloon
lawn chair and fly to Idaho. So
hats off to Ken Couch - and the triumph of nominative determinism.

Yeah there’s a bunch of street-style snappers out there,
but Yvan the FaceHunter is the only one that offers a balance between
the conservatively classy and the experimentally outré. Do
we sound like tossers yet? I certainly hope so. |

d/Arts/07
is Australia's premier screen and digital media arts festival,
hosted by d/Lux/MediaArts, and when we heard that DVD-mag Wolphin
was getting involved, we got Very Excited Indeed, because they
share San Franciscan office space with our faves at McSweeney's.
Each issue of Wolphin offers an extraordinary exploration of
unique short films, "designed to make you feel the way we felt
when we learned that dolphins and whales sometimes, you know,
do it". Wolphin's editor/curator Brent Hoff will be the keynote
speaker at the free festival forum, and afterwards is screening
an hour long compilation of the best from the Wolphin vaults
for ticket-holders. |

Well it's about time, isn't it? The Clientele
are a London-based fourpiece who formed ten years ago, and have
since been lifted to legendary status amongst music blogs, and
opened for bands like Spoon and Brian
Jonestown Massacre. They're bringing their own particular
brand of soft-sounding, sometimes-psychedelic, pseudo-60s pop
to Australia on the back of their warmest and richest album
to date, God Save The Clientele, out now through Popfrenzy.
In keeping with anything Popfrenzy releases, there's more to
this band than can be garnered by listening to one or two songs
over MySpace.
We highly recommend this gig. And we have tickets and a CD to
giveaway as well. |

| [WATIM]
presents 12x12 aMBUSH
GALLERY 20-27
July |
 |
[weAREtheIMAGEmakers]
presents 12x12, an exhibition that opens on the 20th of July at the
aMBUSH
Gallery
(4a James St., Waterloo). It goes for a week, and features
12 original works by 12 Aussie artists, each on 12"x12" canvases.
With names like YOK, Dyzla, Ant Keogh, Ben Frost, Arnie Arnold,
EAMO and Numskull it's pretty much a who's
who of the upcoming Australian arts scene (with an emphasis on street
art).
The brainchild of photographer/artist Brad
Eastman, W.A.T.I.M supports emerging
Australian artists, illustrators and photographers. We spoke to him,
then some of the other artists, and then they spoke to eachother.
Groundbreaking. |

Brad
Eastman (Beastman)
Brad
On W.A.T.I.M: I wanted to take on a project like this as
a way of improving my own skills as a designer, editor and artist
- whilst building a network of likeminded people, making new friends
and doing my bit to help out other emerging artists.
On Skating and Creating: Being out on the streets
and travelling around looking for skating spots in random locations
enables you see and experience a lot of different things that other
people don't. I guess it's all of these experiences that skaters want
to share with others through mediums that are as free and creative
as skateboarding. |
|
On The Scene: You definitely see a lot of people starting
to go to art events, not so much to see or buy the art, but to be
seen and look cool. But whatever, at the moment the more art events
that happen in Sydney the better, it's only helping to grow the
local art community.
On Favourite Websites: skateboard.com.au,
australianINfront.com.au,
fecalface.com,
crailtap.com,
redbubble.com,
pixelsurgeon.com
- I could go on forever. Keep an eye on: The 12x12
picks - plus Sam Smith, Kill Pixie, Anthony Lister and the whole
Everfresh crew.

Ant
Keogh
The first piece of art he bought was a small piece
by Melbourne Artist, Dave O’Brian
The most recognisable thing about his work is probably
the characters.
Hummerville
is a fictitious town. The characters are all made up from my head.
I just start sketching and it goes from there. I had an idea that
I could populate a town with characters a bit like a film. (But I’ve
since found out it’s also a real town in America.)
Melbourne gives you a snack-size piece of the exciting
and arty stuff that goes on around the world, but it’s kind
of laid back and easy to get around. It’s a kind of mini-London,
but with better food. |
|
Dyzla
asks: “Your new show is called Hummerville, do you like big
shiny sports utility vehicles?” No. In fact I just
got rid of my petrol-guzzler (1965 Valiant).
Yok
asks: “Does each painting have its own story or is there a
similar message throughout?” I think they all have
their own story but there are some recurring themes like childhood,
awkwardness, love, fear, sadness, memory, mortality.

YOK
The most recognisable thing about his work is the
eyes. And maybe strange facial hair.
He was part of the
Wooster/11
Spring Street project in New York. In Melbourne there
is an event called Empty
Show run by some great guys that is similar. They find
an old abandoned warehouse and tell artists where it is for the first
week to paint it, then they tell the public after a week is over to
view it. No one knows who runs it.
Does he participates in unsolicited street art? Yes.
Has he been caught? Yes.
What, no details?
The best part of his career was living in Kenya for a year.
|
|
Ant
Keogh
asks “I've never done wheat paste stuff… how do you
get the images so big?” Draw it on large paper, or
photocopy it.
Dyzla
asks “Do your best ideas come out when you’re smashed?
Or when you’re stone cold sober?” Hmm excellent
question, I think it helps to have good time whenever possible,
but this doesn’t really answer your question. I guess a bit
of both.

Dyzla
The most recognizable thing about his work is the
straight line animals innit! They are corrupted by the places that
they live in.
Other than art he is also a freelance 3D character
designer. But I guess that’s art too.
To get involved in the arts scene in Sydney he wouldn’t
worry too much about ‘schmoozing’ with the ‘trendoids!’.
It’s best to do your own thing. If you are doing good work you
will get recognition, and if you have fun no one can take that away
from you.
You can find his work on the streets of Melbourne,
Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns, Singapore and Bali if it hasn’t all
been buffed yet! I will be showing in Iran, Thailand and the UK this
year, and putting up more stuff along the way.
|
|
Ant
Keogh
asks “Does it piss you off when people paint over your streetart?”
It can piss me off. Yes. But it’s all meant to be a bit temporary
anyway isn’t it? I think all the 'beef’ that goes down
is a bit silly… Sometimes if I’m attached to a particular
spot I will reclaim it though.
Yok
asks: “What can you see out your window? Does it ever affect
your work?” Right now I’m in a room in the
jungle in Borneo, I’ll be damned if I can see anything interesting
through the mozzie guard! But yes I do take tons of inspiration
from the places I visit. I guess I’m a bit of a cultural sponge.

PANCAKE
MOUNTAIN
So
there's educational songs, kids dancing on stage, a handpuppet
host called Rufus, and we think it's a children's show...
But when the theme is by Fugazi, the kids
are dancing to Arcade
Fire, Metric
and the Scissor
Sisters, and Rufus interviews
The White Stripes and Bright
Eyes, we get all flummoxed. They call it a response
to the dumbing-down of children's programming. We call it
the Best Job Ever. |

July
19 – August 15
We know we’ve gone a bit heavy on the art in this issue,
but there’s really so much out there at the moment and
we didn’t want to leave anything out. The incredible thing
you see to your left is an installation piece by Yuko Matsuzawa
(bet you she’s from Japan…). She is exhibiting a
recreation of her delicate NYC show together with photographic
prints of her work; her found environment put together painstakingly
with pins and wires, to a spectacular and poetic effect. |

OLD
MAN RIVER THE
VANGUARD |
|
20
July
If Old
Man River's debut Good Morning was a day,
it would be a barefoot day in Summer when you're in the park
with seven friends, a few beers, and nothing to do tomorrow.
If the ubiquitous 'Sunshine' doesn't give you a hint of what
to expect from a live gig, Ohad's toured with the likes of Bob
Evans, Josh Pyke, and last month with Ben Lee
in front of the Dalai Lama. At the Vanguard he'll be supported
by that parade of colour and fun that is Cuthbert and
the Nightwalkers. Smiles all round. |

It's been a four year wait for The Bang Gang to make a label
debut on Modular, so pour yourself a double vodka Redbull
and welcome to the disco. Sydney's Ajax, Jaime Doom, Dangerous
Dan, Gus da Hoodrat & DJ Damage have mixed over 70 including
(predictably..) Muscles, Klaxons, Avalanches, Soulwax
and Cut Copy. 2 discs of electro, techno
and beats, and the only obvious change between them is the
mood - from 'Munted' to 'Very Munted'. It might not be groundbreaking,
but it will be upsetting neighbours nationwide this season
so get used to it. |
