Welcome to August. You are now older and wiser than you were a month ago. You now know, for example, that dissing Potter is apparently as acceptable as dissing God, and wins you just as many friends. You know that falling over in public is funny when you’re Howard, and funnier when you’re Beyonce, but it’s still too soon to joke about the Klaxons. (What? We can make an iTortoise but we can’t wheel a gurny on stage? ...Laziness.)

Hopefully after last year you'll be wearing gumboots to Byron this weekend - to your left is a visual lesson of 'why'. And today's news should teach you to stop holding your Civilian Bombers Anonymous meetings and Al Qaeda Book Club sessions over MSN because you Will Get Caught - regardless of piddling details like ‘evidence’. Disclaimer: We have never held CBA meetings or Al Qaeda Book Clubs, nor are we aware of such meetings/sessions existing on MSN or otherwi - holy crap there’s helicopters outside already..

FOUND MAGAZINE
For those unfamiliar, the idea is to send in anything one has stumbled-upon, belonging to no-one-knows and speaking stories of who-can-guess. Love letters, hate letters, lists, polaroids, drawings, homework – anything out of context that, once found, serves to satisfy our voyeuristic fetishes and ignite our stagnant imaginations. There’s something too captivating about other people when they don’t know we’re looking, however mundane they are...
HOT CHIP DJ SOUNDS ON SUNDAY AUGUST 5
Since Fuzzy took over Sounds On Sunday, it really did Get Much Better. Yeah, we’ll go there. And in case you don’t believe us, Hot Chip have agreed to do their only Sydney club set there, in celebration of the release of their DJ KICKS mix. Sure, Hot Chip DJ-ing at the Greenwood Hotel is a bit of a bizarre, mind-bending, holy-crap-the-world-is-turning-upside-down idea. But we’re sure it'll work. And this gig is all the more enticing because all of their live gigs have already sold out.

LOKKY'S LOCKS COME OFF SATURDAY AUGUST 11
This is Lachlan. He works in our office. That is his hair, a raging beast he has been cultivating now for eight years. (For comparison: if you were to grow a small male person for that long, it would be 128 cm tall, and weigh 30 kgs.) He’s cutting them off for Amnesty International and if you pledge some money, you’ll get invited to The Party Where It Happens. Just click to the left to email us a pledge amount, and we’ll reply with all the official documents your little hearts desire. Want more? There’s a chance he’ll lose all his strength. And there’s free beer.

Check out her flikr account and drool over the colours, the lights and the beautiful, beautiful people until your keyboards started to get all spark-y… Band shots, social snaps, fashion shoots, artsy ones and everything else - she’s only 25 and not only does she run her own company, BlueMurderStudios, but she’s snapped big names like Xibit, Pink and Borat plus pretty much every single one of your favourite Aussie bands (that shot of the Juggs below is one of hers). Straight from her: “It’s all about getting behind their eyes and reflecting their insides out.”
SPLENDOUR’S BANDS TELL US THINGS
You know those really annoying people on MySpace who send around About Me bulletins where they answer about seven hundred questions that no one even asked them, and so then everyone went to Facebook instead and no one told them? Well, we were those people last week, except instead of doing it on MySpace we did it by email, and instead of answering them ourselves we got bands to do it. Some people call it an “interview”.

MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS
Some Juggernautical Trivia: Their national tour kicks off tomorrow. Their first full length, Dystopia, is out on August 4. It's the first release they’ve had that features the newest Jugg and ex-Lost Valentino Daniel Stricker on drums and vocals. It was released on a label that they run themselves – Siberia Records. We Googled this company, and the results perplexed us. Vincent Juggernaut sat on his bed this weekend and answered some questions.

Current Mood: Obtuse
I am wanted in 4 states
Can you get me a cup of hot water bottle
I want to go play Tetris on my phone.

Where are you at this exact moment? What can you see? I'm sitting on a bed looking at a screen. When I stare at the screensaver for too long I can see into the future.
Describe your music in one sentence, without using one genre-word. Also, in the sentence you must refer to a type of animal. A Siberian tiger chases its prey into a supermarket car park and then tears apart a sub-woofer being installed into some vehicle sitting out the front of JB Hi-Fi. Uhuh...

What's the best interview question you've ever been asked? What was your answer?
"What's the best interview question you've ever been asked? What was your answer?" I think I answered with "What's the best interview question you've ever been asked? What was your answer?"

If you could fuse your music with the music of another artist, who would it be? Kelly Meyerton. She's a prominent sandwich artist at Subway.

What's the strangest place you've heard one of your songs played?
When we left Melbourne Airport last month to fly to Europe, they were playing one of our songs in an airport store. It was a nice little farewell.

What's in your stereo right now? The new Liars record.

OLD MAN RIVER
Old Man River is gracing the stage at Splendour In The Grass, bringing his mellowed out bliss-pop to masses of adoring fans after selling out his last Sydney shows. We have it on Rather Good Authority that not only will Ohad Rein be camping with the plebs, but he'll ALSO be doing some acoustic sets on the campsite both nights as well. And we have a sneaky suspicion that he won't be the only one….

Current Mood: Awake
I am not what I think… I think. (Think about this for a second. It will blow your mind.)
Can you get me a double shot flat white please
I want to love you now! Thanks.

Where are you at this exact moment and what can you see? I am sitting in front of my laptop. It's a bit dirty from greasy fingerprints and I'm wondering 'how the hell can I clean that?'… I can see the sky outside my window, it's clear and blue. I can also see my frangipani plant. It just died from a mysterious disease that got it within the five days I was on tour.

Describe your music in one sentence, without using any genre-words. Also, refer to a type of animal.
My music is best described as 'global'. Some say it sounds like horses galloping backwards.

What do you still own that you've had since you were a kid? Is that a dirty question?!

What was the worst thing ever said about your band/music? Someone said it was 'global music', and that we sounded like horses galloping backwards.

What's your day job? I answer questions.

What's your ingenious quotable quote for today? "Participate joyfully in the sorrows of the world" - Joseph Campbell

Old Man River plays

Splendour In The Grass on Saturday at 1.30 PM (and also at bedtime…)

THE PANICS
The Panics have been Triple J darlings since the beginnings of 2000, with their 2005 effort Sleeps Like A Curse being hailed by Richard Kingsmill as the "absolute anthem of 2005". Their atmospheric alt-country rock has been compared to Go Betweens, Augie March, Sleepy Jackson, You Am I, and Insert Seminal Australian Rock Outfit Here. They signed to Dew Process earlier this year and we expect an album is in the works… Singer Jae Laffer filled this out for us. With comparative brevity.

Current Mood: fine, thanks.
I am a list
Can you get me a favourite
I want to collect.

Where are you at this exact moment and what can you see? I'm close, my eyes are shut

What do you still own that you've had since you were a kid? Receding hair

The band is playing a game of poker. Who's cheating? Robert De Niro

What's your day job? Convict

Most important album in your collection? Why? Baby photos, I'm forgetful

What's the strangest place you've heard one of your songs played? Hobart.

What's in your stereo right now? Car keys

Best hangover cure? Leather boots

Best advice you've been given? Who gave it?
"Rizlas have more stick to them", my mum

HE CAN'T EVEN WALK GOOD
John Howard took a tumble on Tuesday last week. We laughed extremely hard. And we respect him for it. Hang on. Replace “Respect” for “Laughing At Him”. Anyway, click the picture to see it happen. Over and over and over. The best part is the slo-mo replay. (Over and over.) (Bob Dole and Fidel Castro did it too) Like that? Then click here too.

BLACK SNAKE MOAN Dendy
From August 2
We were a bit surprised/intrigued to see a Paramount-bankrolled film staring Samuel L. Jackson and Justin Timberlake is screening at the Dendy. Black Snake Moan is about an old blues player (Jackson) who finds a scantily-clad, beaten and drugged up nympho Christina Ricci by the side of the road. Controversial gender/race representations abound, but are complemented by masterful cinematography and a killer soundtrack – unsurprising, for a follow up to Craig Brewer’s Acadamy- and Sundance-award winning Hustle & Flow.

Wharf2LOUD's Push Series WHARF 2 @ STC
Motel: 16.08 - 18.08, Kittenbone Bridge: 23.08 - 25.08
Wharf2LOUD is Sydney Theatre Company’s annual celebration of Australia’s booming DIY-theatre, intended to be “a space where imaginations can be free to do what they’ve gotta do” (within the confines of their hilariously specific manifesto). This year’s Push Series showcases some of the smaller plays before they become the next big thing – including Motel which stars the ever-busy Brendan Cowell and Kittenbone Bridge, a post-apocalyptic comedy from the makers of Melbourne Comedy Festival’s The Glass Boat. We’ve got tickets to both for you!

The Stage Names is about characters as much as concepts, with songwriter/frontman Will Sheff playing the role of a variety of personas that, despite their disparity, are woven together by the overriding melancholic themes of failure and loneliness to ensure the album stays focused. Still, while the stories are sad, there’s a newfound flippancy, fun and confidence in the song-writing that is as unexpected from the band as it’s welcome. It all ends on ‘John Allyn Smith Sails’, a song about John Berryman’s suicide which reappropriates the Beach Boys’ ‘Sloop John B’ so perfectly and fittingly I’m prematurely declaring it cover of the year. Big call, I know.

Shout Out Louds Our Ill Wills WIN IT : Shout Out Louds : CLICK HERE

What is it about Swedish music that always makes it feel like Summer? Our Ill Wills is warm, it's infectious, and it's got that typical tinge of twee that makes me suspect the Swedish government of adding sugar alongside Instant Musical Talent to their water system. Bjorn Yttlng produced this one - you already know him for his place beside Peter and John. While there are definite PB&J comparisons to be made throughout, they're overtaken by a more striking similarity to the Cure - not only in Adam Olenius's Robert Smith vocals, but the bizarre thematic paradoxes that can make you sing and dance along happily to hopeless despondence.

RELEASED ON DEW PROCESS  07 AUGUST > MYSPACE
Bumblebeez Prince Umberto & The Sister of Ill

At times sounding of early Beastie Boys, this debut from the Australian duo showcases an impressive mix of raps, samples and instrumentation. Crisp mixing from Zdar (Paris) makes for a cleaner sound than the previous releases from the ‘Beez which received mixed reviews in the US. With some songs sounding cluttered, the stellar tracks are the ones that are less complex – such as current single ‘Dr Love’ and electro pop track ‘Rio’. (AP)

They Might Be Giants The Else

That Malcolm In The Middle theme 'Boss Of Me' won a Grammy and yeah, we understandably expected this album to be nothing more than comparable nasal vocals, novelty lyrics and Mighty Mighty Bosstones style tunes. But you gotta love them for being able to make pop music bookish. The album can get a bit grating, but there's some good hooks and 60's-pop gems reminiscent of The Kinks in there. Check out the first release for the 23 track bonus disk. (AP)

RELEASED ON LONGTIME LISTENER 14 JULY > MYSPACE
The Exploders Easy and The Sun

With so much fluro clothing and DJ whats-his-names about, it’s relieving that good, well performed pub rock is still alive and kicking - because of bands like The Exploders. Recorded both in their hometown of Melbourne and in sweltering Texas, the duo offer as much in the direction of alt country psychedelica as they do the blues– thanks to the soaring vocals and overlapped 6 and 12 string guitars that prevail. (AP)

RELEASED ON RUBBER RECORDS 4 AUGUST > MYSPACE
Midnight Juggernauts Dystopia

This much awaited debut sounds as much like a soundtrack to a 1982 Sci-fi as it does a dance record. The dance floor hits like ‘Shadows’ and ‘Road To Recovery’ are overtaken by dark and mysterious synthed soundscapes that take you through space and time. With rave reviews from Justice, and the addition of Ex- Lost Valentino’s drummer Daniel Stricker, the album picks up the sonic direction the two EP’s were headed… and then launches the whole thing into the stratosphere.
