We know, we know.. This issue is missing a section.. We'd like to have some fantastic excuse involving noble causes, saved lives or a forgivable mourning period, but all we can really fall back on is the truth: Splendour happened. The music was spectacular, the weather was faultless and the drinks were as cold as they were costly. But they were also just as continuous, and afterwards we hit the wall so hard and with such velocity we were mashed into the wall, we became the wall, and other people started hitting us.
...
Congrats to the Swans for giving us another one up on Melbourne, congrats to the Grim Reaper for its fabulous new look and congrats to anyone who even attempted running the City2Surf. We were too busy strolling the House2Pub which, while equally popular, is far less altruistic and actually happens every weekend. Still, at least we got involved.

FRIENDCORE
FRIENDCORE was featured on JTV a coupla times, so it's possible you've seen it before. We hadn’t, but when we found it we emailed it to everyone we knew. It’s DIY, hilarious, young and local, and is a creation of Ben and Rob about whom we know nothing other than they live in Sydney, are in their early 20s, and seem to have a penchant for awkward silences and stellar timing. They're currently doing more stuff for JTV, as well as ABC2's "Good Game". It takes a lot to make us lol, but they did real good. And yes, top right is a pigeon playing a keytar.
MUM AND FBi THE BIRTHDAY BASH  2 September
It’d be pretty great if it was your birthday party and instead of spending heaps of money on beer and party pies to use as a friend-trap, mum could organize it all. And instead of your weird drunk and tonedeaf uncle singing happy birthday, you'd pull Muscles, Lost Valentinos, Paper Scissors, Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers, AJAX, Jamie Doom, plus a bunch more. And then like 500 friends would not only show up but also give you money. And you'd launch an album on the night because hey, it’s your birthday and that’s just how you roll. Yeah, way to go FBi. Hooray for you. Hooooooorraaayyyyy. For you.

NEW DIRECTIONS NEW THEATRE From 22 August
This season of New Directions features three plays over three weeks from three of Britains best contemporary playwrights. Damages by Steve Thompson is about a tabloid paper an hour before deadline, and sounds to us like a UK Frontline. In Dennis Kelly’s After The End, Louise is trapped in a bomb shelter with the strange, unbalanced guy from work who's heaps into Dungeons and Dragons. And a happy couple move from innocent bliss through cynicism to ultimate breakdown in Honeymoon Suite by Richard Bean, which presents snippets of a relationship at age 18, 43 and 67. We have a double pass for all 3.

MINIGRAFF
MiniGraff reprazentz* both the local and the (largely destitute) female street-art scene, and challenges the very notion of urban decor itself - transforming gutters into landscapes and waste into 'flutters' of butterflies. She's collaborated with the likes of NumskullTeazer and designer Stephanie Cranford, and has even been commissioned by David Jones and the Leichhardt Council to jazz up the scenery. But it's around the Darlinghurst/Kings Cross area that you're more likely to find her independent work... And also of course on the interweb. * (we so gangsta)

  GIFTWRAPPED
So she bought a 15 denier stocking, squeezed her head into it, took her clothes off and filmed herself singing.. We’ve all been there... This is the latest clip from Sia thanks to Kris Moyes - blood-brother of Presets' K.I.M and video-clipper extraordinaire. He’s directed for Architecture In Helsinki, Softlightes and (of course) the Presets. And he actually manages to make a naked Sia look hideous.

FAKER AND SPARKADIA  Annandale Hotel
24 August
Seeing Faker listed on a gig guide was so intriguing we actually walked from the couch to FakerSpace to see what they’ve been doing since the vindictive laws of overplay ruined 'Hurricane' for everybody. Well, they’ve been making a new album, and while there’s still no new songs up online you’ll get a pleasant surprise – enough time has past that we can finally listen to their old stuff again without cringing. Seriously worth rediscovering, AND Sparkadia will be there. Just let gooooooooooo…

BLACK SHEEP Greater Union
From 16 August
Remember that time you got home really wired at 5am, and there was a movie on called Killer Condom and you watched it all the way through and sat there afterwards just staring at the screen and shaking a little? And then when you tried to explain it in the morning it was like trying to explain a dream that lasted four seconds in reality but fourteen lifetimes in your distorted mind? Yeah? Well THIS movie is a zombie sheep shlock horror comedy. And it looks hilarious.

This album is a couple of months old, but Throw Shapes wasn’t born when it was released and we like it a lot and we want to share it with you so we're reviewing it now. Deal with it. It’s Canadian songwriter Leslie Feist’s third solo album. She’s worked with Peaches, Gonzales and of course Broken Social Scene, but her own music has an alt-folk charm. Kind of like Sheryl Crow, except, you know, good. Before this comparison puts you off, listen to ‘Sea Lion’. (Alex P)

Architecture in Helsinki Places Like This
After all the blog-hype, the remix album and the hugely successful US-tour, Architecture finally came back home, stripped back to six members from eight, with an amazing (AMAZING!) live act and a more electronic sound – vocals are beefed, handclaps are numerous and the beats are tropical. Yeah it’s a low star-allocation for a feature album, but just because it almost caused an in-office brawl. We settled with 3.5 on the basis that, while one thinks it's amazing (AMAZING!), another thinks: “it's like being tickled: too much and you start to hurt." (Steph H Vs Alex P)

Bat For Lashes Fur and Gold
It’s hard to tell if she’s more like Bjork, Kate Bush or Cat Power, but if they all got together to down a few reds and write a post-modern tragedy, the result’d be pretty close. Harpiscords, pianos and layers of eerie vocals, with dramatic songs of love decayed – it’s  hard not to imagine interpretive dancing and a smoke machine. It’s not as silly as it sounds, and it’s just been nominated for a Mercury Music Prize. (Alex P)

Loene Carmen Rock n Roll Tears
A rock album written about, you guessed it, rock n roll. Carmen sings like a low-wind heatwave – rough, hot and at times a little breathless (think Kim Deal with emphysema). The pace remains slow and with an alt-country buzz and while ‘Nashville High’ has gained local indie radio play, the album as a whole lacks variation between song structures. Still - a good album for a Sunday afternoon lazing about the ‘ranch.(Alex P)
RELEASED ON SHOCK RECORDS 25 AUGUST > MYSPACE
Liars Liars
Album #4 arrives after mixed reviews of the first three from this experimental LA outfit, who are known for swapping genres between releases. This one has elements of post punk, fuzz, post-rock and all sorts of Sonic Youth-inspired noise, with guitars and vocals layered like moussaka. It’s an impressive sound, but hard to maintain - a few songs seem too barren in comparison.(Alex P)
RELEASED ON MUTE RECORDS 06 AUGUST > MYSPACE
Ratatat Remixes Vol. 2
Even though the NY duo's hometown bias is made clear with a ubiquitously-featured Biggy and Jay-Z, the warped-out downtrodden electro hip hop beats are refreshing, and make the gangsta rap almost palatable ("...where da party at 'n' can I bring my gat?") So if you can, imagine these songs had a divorce and remarried happier with hotter partners. Or if you're like us, just be happy to hear two other people do some remixes that aren't Diplo or Switch.
