For the record, that whole APEC business would have gone down a whole lot differently if we were in charge. For starters, we probably wouldn’t have hosted all of the worlds’ most influential people (and John Howard) under the same roof on the most If-I-Could-Pick-Any-Major-World-Event-Anniversary-To-Blow-People-Up-I’d-Pick-This-One weekend. Also, we would have done the whole thing over a sponsored conference call. (We were thinking A(A)P(T)EC, but with Bush in attendance Smart Chat might not be an appropriate tagline.) Anyway, then we’d have been free to spend $330 million on a more long-term jay-walk crackdown. Free-strolling fu*kers.

Aaand in less self-aggrandisingly sarcastic news, congrats to our friends at FBi radio for their Big Fourth Birthday. According to the experts, Age Four is when you learn to draw a person, use past tenses, and hold a pencil correctly. But from what we could gather on the night, it seemed to be more about drinking.

SECRET FUN SPOT
The Secret Fun Spot is a virtual museum for all things retro, novelty and nostalgic, born of founder Kirk Demarais' pastime as the archetypal packrat - he's apparently held onto Absolutely Everything from his childhood with the age-old adage of 'one man's trash' in mind. "It's finding something wonderful that you forgot you'd ever lost… It's not the stuff itself that's important. The stuff is just a tie to the lost world of childhood." Either way, awesome graphics and typography to pinch ideas from…
TATTOO DARLING Angelique Houtkamp
Angelique Houtkamp, the tattoo darling herself, is coming from Holland to our very own city to celebrate her debut into the publishing world. From the sultry pin-ups of the West to the romance of Spain, from the temptress mermaid to the landlocked sailor, her artwork has appeared on skin, buttons, handbags, shoes and baby skulls. She’s being brought over by Outre Gallery and its publishing branch, who’ve been kind enough to give us a copy of the stunningly designed book - but unkind enough to make us give it to you instead.

1990s 27 September Gaelic Club
After supporting the likes of Babyshambles, CSS, the Long Blondes and Franz Ferdinand, 1990s travel all the way from Scotland on the back of their latest offering Cookies. It sounds like what would happen if you got Rooney, the Thrills and OK GO together on top of the table at a keg party - expect a lot of frenzied dancing, handclapping, and a confident challenge to the age-old laws of indie-kids-don't-move-their-arms. Also Pitchfork gave them a pretty solid 8.1, so basically we're in business.

DISRUPT
This is one of those shops you stumble into with a friend, and you're both like "holycrapthisisawesome" but neither of you say anything until you've left because you want everyone else in the shop to think that you always knew it was there. DISRUPT was opened only 8 months ago by Stu and Meghan who wanted a platform to sell their own designs, but it's since grown into "a celebration of the imagination, bringing together all the mediums of expression so people who come to the store can experience art on different levels". Obscure fashion labels, limited artworks, collectible toys, accessories and comic/art books - it's all there to drool over. But please wipe up when you're done because it's a nice looking shop. Follow the trail of spit to 4/450 Elizabeth St. Surry Hills Sydney.

  FACEBALL
Two people sit facing each other, ten feet apart. Person A throws a beach-ball at Person B's head. Person B is in no way allowed to succumb to the natural laws of self-protection. Should the ball hit Person B squarely in the face, Person A gets a point. This is Faceball, a brand new "fun-for-all-the-family game of projectile-based violence" that was devised within the Flickr offices in San Fran. Crazy Americans.

SHIRTY 07 Newtown Neighbourhood Centre
15 September
Shirty07 is a not for profit, one-day-only, $69-capped, we've-been-saving-all-month-for-this market, selling naught but the humble tee. It's on from midday to midnight in Newtown, right across from the station where all those Newtown Performing Arts School kids hang out trying to out-eccentric each other. A launchpad for up and coming artists and designers, it features work of many (almost all) of our local faves - including Imok, Meet Tyrone, emShop, Smitten and the 2x4 AND People Like Us collectives. And there's a bar and live music too.
ZINE FAIR & NIGHT MARKET Sydney University

14 September
There's so much going on here we're going to have to just list a few points. A twilight market. A zine fair. Part of the Verge Arts Festival at Sydney Uni. On Science Road and inside the Graffiti Tunnel. Two of our favouritest Sydney live acts - Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers and Cloud Control. The Mares are there too, they're not our favourite, but they have their moments. There will be food, a bar, and samba. And fairy lights. And also, it's FREE. How often do things like this happen? Not often enough. See you there. (It's FREE).

TUNNG Good Arrows  WIN IT :: TUNNG :: CLICK HERE
It’s rare that an album immerses us so completely that we’re inspired to pick up a long-lost instrument, shamelessly assault it for 27 minutes to the chagrin of our housemates, and then put it quietly back and book ourselves in for a lesson. Expansive folktronica or pastoral pop; a joyfully ordered mess or a soothing cacophonic experiment – whatever it is, Tunng have refined their gentle tinny arrangements with more elegant melodies, and shrouded it all in murky imagery and eerie samples that lead you deep into an obscurity that you’ll be happy to get lost in. WHITLEY The Submarine
Talented Australian troubadours are by no means uncommon, and Whitley slips right into the Missy Higgins mould - but then reinvigerates it with more complexity, and more of a boyish-type charm. Beautifully composed and charmingly performed lyrical folk tunes are augmented by faultless production and rich accompaniment, in a balanced album that goes far beyond that which should reasonably be expected from a 22 year old's debut. First loves, forgotten dreams, cheap clothes and an apt Jeff Buckley cover are all lifted into a quiet-sort-of-hopefulness that'll make you want to take your shoes off under your desks. (SH)

AESOP ROCK None Shall Pass
Have you ever read about those mysterious pirate radio stations that used to exist before podcasts and shit, where the ramblings of conspiracy theorists were so on the nose they had to broadcast from international waters?! Aesop's thick spit flow and paranoid rumbles could be the remnants of those lost transmissions, and were it not for the sometimes repetitiveness of Blockhead's bass funk productions and DJ Biz's unnecessary scratching, this would be the alfoil hat album of the year. ANGUS & JULIA STONE A Book Like This
It’d be really nice to have a cup of tea and a cuddle with these siblings. We could go fishing and dangle our feet into the lake. He’d whip out an acoustic guitar, she’d be on tambourine and they’d throw me a harmonica which I’d catch in my mouth, and then we’d all gaze lovingly at each other and sing ‘The Beast’. As expected, 13 tracks of ethereal, familial love, lovingly bound in a story-book style package and booklet to make sure you all buy a hard copy. And yes, we're aware this is a folk heavy week. Apologies to any unsatisfied trance-addicts out there. (AP V SH)

DARDANELLES Mirror
I expected this album to be standard beat driven rock, and was surprised at the somber mood captured even within the ‘Introduction’. Songs tend to escalate with moments of shadowy tension and then subside to quieter places, reminiscent of Midnight Juggernauts in acoustic mode. Josh’s voice isn’t the strength behind the songs, which are well written but seem to fall a bit short of previous single ‘Origami Tree’. What they do, they definitely do better than most - but it's nothing that'll stick around your record player for too long. (AP)

THE BRUNETTES Structure and Cosmetics
Retro chic, or Retro Night at the RSL? The Brunettes sit precariously on knife’s edge with this one. In songs like “B.A.B.Y” they hold true to the fun pop of their 2004 Mars Loves Venus that got them the attention of twee-heavy SubPop Records. But they’ve failed to progress into something grander. The arrangements are fatter, sure, but there’s still too much flirting with cliché - so ultimately we’re reminded of the overweight men in leather jackets and sideburns we kept running into at the 50’s fair last month. KANYE WEST Graduation
[OPEN LETTER TO KANYE WEST] Dear Kanye. When we read that you'd never heard of Daft Punk 'til this year we thought you must have been living in a cave. But now we realise you were just up your own ass. What's it like there? We imagine it's you and Chris Martin, doing blow off synthesizers and giggling at each others eighties style sweaters. Maybe Will.I.Am comes over to add that authentic African vibe. Or maybe it's just Toto. Congratulations Kanye, you've graduated to the Phil Collins of hiphop. Love from, (MR vs LM).
