Darren Wigley, Rebecca Murphy, Todd Fuller and a whole host of incredible artists from Sydney and beyond, set the walls on fire with their provocative / beautiful / weird approaches to the age-old genre of portraiture. Among them there's a giant rabbit, a furry woman, a spider/woman, a woman covered in ash and tar, a futuristic caveman, a man with a box for a head, and chairs as well. Believe You/Me - Philip Soliman @ Monstrosity, free, 6-9pm
On Friday June 25, from 6-9pm, Monstrosity Director Philip Soliman launches his solo exhibition of photography, video and installation entitled Believe You/Me.
Philip Soliman uses the traditional "documentary" media of video and photography, combined with immersive installations, to ask questions about human beings, and our fundamental beliefs about ourselves, each other and the world.
His solo show Believe You/Me brings together three of his current projects.
The Throw Shapes webzine has relaunched as a blog, but the thrust (if we may) is still the same: to support the local and independent arts, music and grassroots projects that aren't getting the attention they deserve.Sydney's creative scene isn't as small as it seems - we just need to tug on the waistband of her jeans to fit a bit more talent in.
At least 80% of our content is about things happening in and around Sydney, and 80% pushes creative work existing on an independent or grassroots level. The rest is here because it represents something new; an idea to take home with us, a subculture or movement missing from our lives, or simply a demystification of success. Either that or it's here because we think it's funny and we have a blog. Mostly, we just want to get as many inspiring people together in one place as we possibly can.

So, now that we’re well into the second half of 2010, that annoying little question is going to start popping up in conversation: have you got your New Year’s Eve celebrations sorted yet? Sigh – it’s August! And yes – it might seem a little far off to be thinking about your plans for what is probably the most annoying and expensive night of the year to do anything in this city. Or maybe you don’t want to be making any early decisions, in case you meet some celebrity between now and then who has a house with harbour views and is going to invite you to their amazing party full of A-listers and fancy catering. But seeing as that’s unlikely, and from experience it is no fun to leave it to the last second and be all dressed up with nowhere to go on NYE (no matter how much you insist you don’t care about one stupid night and would rather stay at home and watch a dvd with your cat), let me propose to you that Peats Ridge Festival is the solution!
I’ve never been to Peats Ridge, but from all reports it is pretty much a guaranteed super fun way to spend your New Year’s Eve. And seeing as I’d already (!) decided in the past week that I’m going there this year, getting the first lineup announcement today was pretty exciting. Usually a more low-key and locally-flavoured affair, some big international indie names like Built to Spill, Shout Out Louds, Born Ruffians and Lightspeed Champion alongside all our local faves will make this year’s festival even more worth the effort.
Luckily for all of us left behind in Sydney this weekend, Splendour has not created a good times vacuum. There’s plenty of gigs, parties, arts events and other fun stuff to go to – and I’ve compiled a list of activities that will deliver you a truly splendid weekend for $460 or (very) under.
Just a little reminder that Guineafowl are residing at Oxford Art Factory (almost) every Friday in July – that’s the 2nd, 9th, and 16th with various wonderful and colourful supports - Sooners, The Preachers and Yae Tiger respectively.
You can also hear them on the 4th of July on FBi radio - a live recording from Studios 301, not singing the American anthem, as I may have hoped for on independence day.
Guinefowl have three guitarists in their band and have exploded into existence over the last five months or so.

Kirin J Callinan’s been hiding away for a while, but it turns out he’s doing an event calledUp Late With Jim Shirlaw, which means that Jim Shirlaw is finally just putting his name in event titles so we can all recognise that it is something he is organising so it’s going to probably be very good. Thanks Jim. There’s also going to be an installation from underground fashion label FTW and support music from Cabaret Collado, all happening at Oxford Art Factory on Thursday, the 1st of July (put it in your diaries).
