A few lessons we learnt this month: Don't get publicly drunk if you plan on becoming a state official (at least ours isn't as bad as theirs). Don't put your special parts in a vacuum cleaner if you're a circus dwarf (because you probably have enough to deal with already). Test product names before they're released in case they run the risk of being wildly offensive. And don't leave your horse out in the cold.

But the big class is scheduled for early September; what we like to call "Needlessly Pissing Off An Entire City 101", a pre-req course for a BA in Pre-emptive Overreaction. And The Family Bush is apparently so accomplished in this subject they don't even need full attendance - he's weaselled his way into an early mark, and his wife has a letter from home excusing her entirely. Get ready for lockdown.

SKULL A DAY
This has been blogged to death already, but we're as impressed with his diligence as we were with his initial creativiuty. The premise is (morbidly) simple - every day fro a year he needs to make a skull out of something new. Today is number 85. What have YOU been doing with your life for the past 85 days? HUH?
Journey into Sin @ Newtown Theatre 22 Aug - 15 Sept
Glutton for Punishment, Just Another Tuesday Night, Australian Faust and Waiting for Jamie Oliver are four original Australian plays that, put together by a cast and crew of over 40 industry talents, are taking over the Newtown Theatre for three weeks. A conglomerate piece produced by Stephen Carnell, Nick Bolton and Louise Tychsen, each of the four 30 minute plays revolve around, yes, the theme of 'Sin'. The last time you journeyed into sin for two straight hours you were probably pretty exhausted by the end of it. You'll get to sit down for this one.

This Is Not Art - Sound Summit Party 28 September
A pre-emptive shout-out to this year's This Is Not Art festival (27 Sept - 1 Oct) - Australia's annual independent/emerging/experimental arts celebration. The festival consists of four separate (mostly-free) programs held over five days in Newcastle that, through performances, panels, workshops and exhibitions, showcase creative innovation in emerging art and media forms. The Sound Summit program has been put together for "anyone who makes, creates or listens to music". That's you, and they're throwing you a party featuring FreQ Nasty Sound System (UK), Aloe Blacc (Stones Throw), Steve Spacek(UK/LA), and Sydney's own Catcall, Ro Sham Bo and Anna Lunoe. Plus many more.

JASON JACENKO
Jason Jacenko dapples in everything - tattoos, street art, toy design, skateboard design, animation, sculpture, satiric iconography, satanic adulation. We made the last one up but regardless, his work has risen to cult status over the years, and it kind of reminds us of a bastard lovechild between Mark Ryden and Tim Burton. There's something extremely off-putting when the occult and fantastical is brought to life with airbrushed, wide-eyed purity.

  PIXELATOR
We shamelessly stole this from our good friends at the Kripy K-Blog. Pixelator is a New York art/design collective that are taking a commissioned performance art concept to the streets. The words 'anonymous' and 'unauthorised' are sexy in their own right, and what's followed is a DIY attempt to "turns those ugly, blinding video billboard ads into art". Click to the left to see what we're talking about.

Cut Off Your Hands/teenagersintokyo Annandale
2 September ALL AGES
There's pretty much nothing about this gig that will not make it easy for you not to dance. Kind of like how there's pretty much nothing about that last sentence that will not make it easy for you not to understand. Cut Off Your Hands (nee Shaky Hands) hail from NZ, and other than infectious hooks and speedy riffs they promise an overzealous front man swinging from various parts of the stage. They're touring nationally with the grrrl (and one guy) group teenagersintokyo, who are incidentally as teenage as they are Japanese. Regardless; a fun, poppy night for all (ages).

Once Participating Cinemas
From 30 August
This was featured at the recent International Film Festival and, trying not to sound all girly, for 85 wonderful minutes our hearts were dancing on the wind. It's an independent, music-heavy piece set in Dublin, starring the Frames' Glen Hansard. He's a charmingly heartbroken handiman who busks in his spare time. She's a delightful single-mother foreigner who sells flowers on the street. It was a Sundance Audience Award winner this year, and is perfect for a first date, grandma date, or hangover. Or all three together if you're having an extremely peculiar day.

My music nerd friend said he couldn't wait to hear this album, so I thought I'd take this young blogger's advice and give it a spin. I fell for the harmonies of AC Newman, Neko Case and Kathryn Calde on what's he says is their most accomplished release to date. More alt-country than pop, Challengers is a gem - The scope and complexity of the song writing and album composition will mean this one stays in your player for weeks. (AP)

M.I.A. Kala
Maya Arulpragasam returns, seeking revenge on boring music with a bootleg-flavoured street-party of an album sure to make your face melt off. It's just a shame that amongst the impressive shared production credits (Diplo, Switch, Timbaland) the latter has to try and rap. M.I.A will be penalised accordingly. (ALL I WANNA DO IS *BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM* AND-A *CHICKCHA-CHINGG* AND TAKE YA MUNAYYY -ed) (LM)

New Young Pony Club Fantastic Playroom
Postponed tours, Intel adverts and underwhelming live reviews haven't affected the buzz of this band in the slightest. All that means nothing when you're really really ridiculously good looking. It's not all style over substance though - a few songs in and you'll realise disco punk is back in a BIG way. Highlights are 'Jerk Me' and of course 'The Bomb'. Tight basslines, tighter pants. but is it as much singing as it is yelling? (AP)

Blue Juice Problems
Did you go to that house party a while back? The totally packed one with the broken chairs, beer bongs, and er. organ? This album is that party - it's energetic, foul-mouthed and blends ska, hip-hop and DIY rock. After so much yelling, organs and synth, the next morning you'll wake with a headache and vomit down you're shirt, and you've forgotten where you parked your car. Or if you even have a car. (AP)

Ghostwood Ghostwood EP
For the uninitiated, the Ghosts were born in a Sydney high school music room in 2006. Then came months of hype, label rumours, the support slots (Klaxons, Infadels, Mercy/Damn Arms.), the name change and FINALLY the EP contract. It's hard not to be cynical, but we'll swallow our pride with this one - Navidzadeh's raw vocals are a rich backdrop to the layered landscape of guitar experiments and noise, in a release good enough for us to hope they follow through. (AP & SH)

The Ruby Suns The Ruby Suns
The fact that this NZ outfit got to hug the ankles of the Shins on the Aussie leg of their tour speaks volumes of where they're headed. With the Brian Wilson-inspired melodies and sweet, Gibbard-esque vocals, the seven piece have a brand of lazy, hazy 60's sunshine psychadelia that sounds a little like what would happen if Wolfmother calmed down, the Clientele cheered up and everyone started hugging. (SH)
